In most green field installations where new Cat5e/6 UTP cable will be installed to connect remote IP cameras and devices it only makes sense to use the PoE powering option that most major vendors are building into their medium to high-end IP cameras and devices. With PoE only one cable is needed to provide both power and IP connectivity, which reduces installation costs and time.

The keys to successful PoE installations are to make sure that the network switch selected can provide the necessary wattage of PoE that will be needed for each device, and that the aggregate wattage necessary to power all devices simultaneously is available.
